Design of Controllable Structure for Shake Table
Potenza, Vincent
In light of the problems that arose from the intended scaling of the structure, the objectives of the project mostly switched from a realistic model from which one could see the kind of stresses that could be caused from an earthquake on a real structure to a structure which would demonstrate key phenomenon known to occur when a structure is under seismic loading. The table and new structure together would also demonstrate through the use of controllers, which were to be designed and incorporated in the structure, the way in which important characteristics of the building could be changed and the effect of those changes on the activity of the structure under seismic loading. In short the project goal changed from a tool to analyze a structure to a learning aid or pedagogical tool to demonstrate important concepts regarding structures under seismic loading.
